Climbing Amberd fortress
Amberd is a 10-th century fortress which is now a famous place for tourists. The walls of the castle were built from roughly chopped basalt blocks. The walls were positioned in an incline, in order to defend from the attackers easily. However, in the 1070s it was invaded by Seljuk Turks, who used it as their military base. Later, in 1197 it was liberated by the Armenian and Georgian forces, led by Zakare Zakarian, who renovated and reinforced the Fortress.
